IN_CERT
With Jo Milne
See video of the process. Author Adolf Alcañiz
IN_CERT is a project that emerged in a context of pandemic and health crisis unprecedented in our times, which aims to make visible the links between science, art and health, the transformative capacity of art and also its social and humanistic dimension.
This proposal is the result of the explorations carried out throughout a complex year. From Can Manyé, Art Center of Alella promoted a stable working group made up of artists and people linked to the art world with scientists, research staff and doctors from the Brothers Trias iand Pujol Hospital (Can Ruti). For a whole year the group debated around this new reality, counting at the same time with the participation of psychologists, philosophers and artists who have worked in a pandemic scenario. The collective look and sharing has made us see what could be a post-pandemic scenario, a scenario that still seems really uncertain.
We developed the artistic project together with Jo Milne, an artist with a long career linked to the scientific world. On behalf of the Brothers Trias and Pujol Hospital Roger Paredes and Lourdes Mateu, professionals from the Infectious Diseases Service and front-line researchers in the fight against Covid19, capital pillars to build the framework for reflection, accompanied by Cristina Vilaplana, researcher at the Institute of Investigation Brothers Trias and Pujol (IGTP) of the Badalona campus and by Adolf Alcañiz in Videographic Work.
Works
With Jo Milne, we developed the work from a series of interviews with hospital health personnel who were on the front line of care and most of whom had suffered from the disease at the beginning of the pandemic.
In my case, the result of the work materialized in 19 chairs + a silver horizon, an installation of a series of intense pink chairs with «silver-words» in Can Manyé —which, later, were distributed throughout the theaters waiting at the Brothers Trias and Pujol Hospital. These chairs were framed with a silver «horizon-crack», a large horizontal crack formed by different scars, which have been with me for a few years and which I suture each time with silver. A text extracted from the conversations held, configure the horizon. Also Without the Other, a video starring the dancer Ina Dunkel, who shows and evokes through a chant-murmur the absence of the «other» in times of pandemic. And finally, You have to talk, you have to write, a selection of photographic images of an intimate nature and fragments of texts that bear witness to the «silver-moments», in which an instant of deep reflection and personal liberation takes place, in moments critics of the pandemic, narrated by the interviewed patients and health workers.
Video Wound-horizon
Jo Milne, a British artist, creates throughout this project some large-format paintings that collect and make visible, in their structures and plots, our troubled world, from the micro to the macrocosm. The weft of invisible friends are five large-format paintings. Ode to oblivion collects, in an iron showcase, five cyanotypes with collages of images from the past and the present that correspond to five viruses that have disrupted modern times. The Shapeshifter series made up of light sculptures as enigmatic as viruses. Finally, Mutante foundlings, what lies in wait is a series of rings of variable dimensions.
Regarding the artistic interventions within the Brothers Trias and Pujol Hospital, the two large-format paintings in fuchsia pink and silver that Jo Milne places on the wide walls of the large hall at the main entrance, are complemented by my intervention in different rooms. waiting room where I installed the nineteen chairs with «silver-words», such as «my dreams», «think together», «accompany», «organise», «emotional health», «persistent covid», «you have to write» or «we must talk».
The exhibition at Can Manyé was held at the end of 2021, accompanied by round tables, debates and performative presentations. The interventions in the Hospital remain until the end of 2023, which is when they begin their roaming around Hospitals in Catalonia.
