Does science have limits? What is the role of the art world in a time of pandemic? Do we know about dying? What do we do about fear? Is it possible to prioritise death with dignity in a health crisis?
IN_CERT is a project born out of the de- sire to create a discourse that, as well as showing up a relationship and a dialogue we have always known about, between art, science and health, stimulates reflection about the exceptional nature of the time we are living through, a time of pandemic that has shaken up every aspect of our lives, from culture to the economy, health, the environ- ment, philosophy and others. The world as we have understood it up to now will never be the same. We therefore need questions and critical thought. The worlds of art, sci- ence and thought set out, through ethics and commitment, to strengthen their nat- ural links to face up to this new reality and work with it.
With the IN_CERT project we also wanted to bring out the role art venues play in soci- ety, their potential for change, as generators of debate, their ability to question the pres- ent, a space for questions and encounters, but also for doubts and discomfort, because life is like that and art is life. We felt it nec- essary to create a space for opportunities to favour and stimulate dialogue between
artists, scientists and the society of which they are a part.
The proposal we are presenting today came about thanks to the desire to weave complicities between doctors, scientists and researchers at the Germans Trias i Pu- jol (Can Ruti) hospital and the Can Manyé arts and creativity centre and Alella town council, an alliance that has made possible a piece of profound, rigorous work, a col- laboration that began just after the start of the pandemic in mid-2020, when we did not know what we were up against or its real magnitude, and this link has lasted up to now. (introductory text fragment by Mercè Pomer, Director of the Can Manyé Art and Creation Space)
